New Stonnington service to include food waste recycling
Stonnington is introducing a new food waste recycling service to help reduce its carbon footprint. But don’t worry, the change doesn’t mean a new bin or different pick-up time.

New bins are a hot topic across Melbourne, but Stonnington’s move to immediately fully incorporate food waste recycling will not have any impact.
The service will be incorporated into its existing garden waste service from March 1.
Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos said everything else would stay the same — “same burgundy bin and same day for collection”.
“Residents will be able to place fruit and vegetables, cheese, eggshells, meat and leftovers alongside their lawn clippings, leaves and branches,” he said.
“Food and green waste collected will be composted and provided to Victorian farms.”
Cr Stefanopoulos said the move would help residents reduce their carbon footprint by limiting what was sent to landfill.
The council trialled the service from March last year, with 700 homes in Armadale, Malvern and Malvern East taking part.
“Food waste makes up over a third of the average waste bin in Stonnington. when this rots in landfill it produces methane — a powerful greenhouse gas and big contributor to climate change,” he said.
