Man slams parking fine tactics

A MAN is fighting a penality he got for double parking outside Ashburton station, arguing he had been there less than a minute and his car was even still running when he was pinged.

After six years of double parking on Welfare Pde near Ashburton station, Colin Robertson was stung for $95 recently.

The 61-year-old said he had “not even turned the engine off” and was just there for “under a minute”.

“I was picking up my son and I literally spotted him, he got into the car and off we went,” he said.

“It is ludicrous there are no signs to warn you against doing this on a wider than average road and in an area where I believe it is quite safe to do so.

“A lot of their motorists do the same thing.”

Mr Robertson said drivers picking up train commuters have “no other option”.

“The carpark is full and there are only two 10-minute parking spaces near the train station,” he said.

“All the other surrounding streets are significantly narrower than Welfare Parade.”

Boroondara Councillor Garry Thompson said two 10-minute parking bays were conveniently located near the station for pick-up drop-off purposes, but more short-term parking spaces were needed.

“(The) council would support the community by advocating this issue to Public Transport Victoria with a view to creating additional short-term parking spaces within the railway station car parks,” he said.

PTV said the State Government is “providing more carparking at railway stations than ever before”.

“We encourage drivers to be courteous to other passengers getting to the station for their morning commute,” a spokesman said.

Between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 Boroondara Council issued eight parking infringements for “varying breaches” on Welfare Pde.

The council is not authorised to enforce parking, issue parking fines or manage parking problems at the Ashburton Railway Station car parks.
