A Melbourne OnlyFans model who stole a $40,000 diamond ring from a Berwick home told police she was given the ring by a girlfriend from the Gold Coast as a “gift”, a court has heard.
Erica Burrell, 27, pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 29 to theft and theft of a motor vehicle.
In the early hours of December 16, 2023, Burrell and her co-accused rummaged through a Mazda 3 sedan inside the garage, where they found a diamond ring with a platinum band valued at $40,000.
The pair took off with the ring, but were arrested within a week at an address in Prahran.
The police found car keys to a Holden stolen from Berwick and spotted the ring on her finger, but the serial number had been scratched off.
Burrell told police it was scratched off due to “wear and tear”, the court heard.
When interviewed by police, Burrell told her she got the ring two years ago from a girlfriend on the Gold Coast who had given it to her as a gift.
Magistrate Vicky Prapas did not want to send Burrell, who had a difficult upbringing, to jail.
However, she did warn Burrell, who is on a community corrections order for other offending, that if she offended again her “house of cards will collapse”.
The court heard Burrell was doing well on her CCO and had not used drugs since August.
Burrell had gotten away from a life of drugs and crime when she moved to Queensland, but upon her return to Melbourne in June 2022 had fallen back in with the wrong crowd.
“It’s not unusual that people relapse, but GHB does scare me,” Ms Prapas said.
Burrell, who was supported in court by her partner, was sentenced to an adjourned undertaking for 12 months.
Her licence was also suspended.
