ELWOOD College students are one step closer to a long-awaited revamp of their dilapidated campus, thanks to a $10 million Labor pledge.
Albert Park Labor MP Martin Foley joined opposition education spokesman James Merlino this afternoon to announce the promised funding, forthcoming if Labor wins the November state election.
“This major new investment will give students state of the art learning facilities so the school can continue to provide a first rate education,” Mr Merlino said.
Brighton Labor candidate Louise Crawford — whose electorate the college now falls in, after boundaries were redrawn — said it was “a fantastic school but urgently needs to be rebuilt and modernised”.
As reported in the Leader on April 20, Elwood College’s 1950s classrooms have languished since a plan to revamp the campus was shelved after Labor’s defeat in 2010.
Mr Foley had made a similar commitment before that election.
Parents and students refused to give up, and have been campaigning to revive their Elwood College Master Plan.
The $10 million will enable the school to complete the first stage of the project.
