A “stunning” Malvern East townhouse and a black Porsche owned by a glamorous eastern suburbs woman were allegedly purchased with drug money, a court has heard.
The Director of Public Prosecutions was on Tuesday granted an unexplained wealth restraining order over the Darling Rd, Malvern East home of Pinar Babacan, as well as a black Porsche sports car she drove.
The County Court heard a forensic accountant had probed Ms Babacan’s finances, and concluded the “acquisition of the property was facilitated by significant contributions from unknown third parties”.
Police suspect “contributions” ultimately came from Ms Babacan’s partner, Brenden Willie, who has been charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of drugs.
The couple were married at a no-expenses-spared wedding at Campbell Point House in 2018.
Ms Babacan is not facing any charges and is not accused of any criminal wrongdoing.
She was not in court on Tuesday, where the restraining order over the townhouse and the Porsche were granted in her absence, in part because the house was listed for sale through real estate agency Marshall White a fortnight ago, and police feared the possibility of Ms Babacan selling the property if she was given notice of Tuesday’s court hearing.
The listing describes the three bedroom townhouse as epitomising “sophisticated style and luxury”.
The agents say the property is a “stunning architect designed boutique residence” with “spectacular proportions, state of the art style and lavish finishes”.
As of Tuesday afternoon, it had an asking price of $1.95m.
If Ms Babacan is to keep the property, she will have to prove that it was purchased with legitimate funds, rather than the alleged drug money police suspect it of being a result of.
Ms Babacan’s LinkedIn shows she has had a series of relatively junior jobs in the fashion and retail industry, including for fashion brands Karen Millen, Sportsgirl and Decjuba, and whitegoods retailer The Good Guys, where she is currently listed as being on maternity leave from.
Pictures of the couple, from happier times, show them enjoying a lavish lifestyle, including helicopter rides and dining at top restaurants.
Ms Babacan could not be reached for comment, and the Marshall White agents handling the sale did not respond to queries.
Mr Willie is next listed to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court for a committal hearing on June 11.
