Two men are still on the run a month after a violent late night robbery in Surrey Hills that police say was out of character for the area.
Police believe the attack on the 31-year-old victim shortly before midnight on May 9 was random and have appealed for public help to catch the crooks.
Detective Senior Constable Stuart Sharp of Box Hill’s Embona task force said the victim was walking home alone along Whitehorse Rd about 11.40pm when a Holden Commodore pulled up beside him.
Two men jumped out and demanded he hand over his bag, and when the victim refused, the men took it from him forcefully, with one of the attackers stabbing him twice in the leg with a kitchen knife, Sen-Constable Sharp said.
Both men fled with the bag, which contained bank cards and $2000 cash the victim won at a casino earlier in the day.
Sen-Constable Sharp said the incident was out of the ordinary for the quiet suburban area and appealed for anyone with information, including dashcam footage taken about the time of the attack, to call Crime Stoppers.
“The way we’re treating it is this was a purely opportunistic type of offence. There was nothing to indicate he was followed,” Sen-Constable Sharp said.
“About two or three cars drove past (following the attack) and then one stopped to render assistance.”

Both offenders were perceived as caucasian or Middle Eastern in appearance.
Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch spokeswoman Suzanne Dunlop said personal safety was paramount and advised against attempting to take something back from an armed offender.
She also suggested avoiding walking alone at night wherever possible and to keep valuables such as phones and wallets out of view.
