The internet has spoken on whether Camberwell is Melbourne’s snobbiest suburb after a Reddit thread ripped into residents of the traditionally affluent inner-eastern area.

The internet has spoken and it’s divided on whether Camberwell is Melbourne’s snobbiest suburb.

A Reddit thread pointing out all that is wrong with the affluent area and its allegedly high brow population recently garnered more than 100 comments from disaffected — and perhaps jealous — critics of the leafy inner-eastern postcode.

Reddit users didn’t hold back when they ripped the area and its well-to-do residents a proverbial new one, calling them “cold, arrogant, self entitled snobs”.

A Progress Leader poll of more than 1900 people found 51 per cent thought Camberwell locals suffered from “discount Toorak syndrome”, that is, they have a chip on their shoulder because they’re not as rich as their Stonnington neighbour.

But 41 per cent insisted Camberwell was a “lovely place” to live and the Reddit thread was a bunch of hooey.

Debates continues over whether Camberwell is Melbourne’s snobbiest suburb.

One commentator, Gordon, said the online thread slagging off Camberwell was a “load of poppycock” and called for a ban on all social media.

Walter was quick to deflect attention to other Melbourne suburbs by saying Corio and Frankston were “the pits”, and Jamie seemed to think Reddit users were jealous.

“We just live in a better suburb than most and we really love that. Three cheers for Camberwell,” he wrote.

Others noted they loved the cafes and movie theatre in the area, while Jim said the suburb wasn’t snobby, but it certainly was boring.

“Not that everything is about alcohol, but it’s also a dry area with minimal options. You are not meant to have fun in this area,” he wrote.

Danny, a resident of the area, was a critic, saying his Camberwell neighbours were “as friendly as a snake”.

While Wilson said he could confirm the locals were indeed snobs.

Anthony said he’d prefer to live in Camberwell rather than anywhere else in Melbourne, but he didn’t think that spoke to his character.

“Personally I would prefer to live in Camberwell rather than Dandenong. Does this make me a snob, probably. But I’d rather be a snob than be robbed and bashed for simply walking to the local shops at night.”
