Reddit users say Camberwell is Melbourne’s snobbiest suburb
A harsh internet forum is tearing an affluent Melbourne suburb a proverbial new one, with posters labelling it the “epicentre of entitled snobbery”. Good-natured locals have laughed off the criticism — despite being accused of “discount Toorak syndrome”.

“Cold, arrogant, self-entitled snobs” is how Reddit users describe Camberwell as they tear the affluent suburb a proverbial new one.
The thread, Wtf is up with Camberwell?, attracted 111 comments online and begins with a user’s desperate internet plea to find out why they can’t fit into their new suburb.
PurpleScrabble wrote they’d recently moved to the coveted leafy inner-eastern postcode but found their neighbours left much to be desired.
“Arrogant, selfish, unfriendly and terrible drivers to boot … is it just me or is there something fundamentally wrong with this area,” they wrote.
They did, however say some nice things. Hospitality staff were nice and so were the parks
But they returned to sinking the boot in, “the people here don’t deserve them”.
Others jumped on the bandwagon, with Spypsy slamming Camberwell as the “epicentre of entitled snobbery”.
Some said Camberwell locals were bitter because they weren’t as rich as their Toorak neighbours, a condition LimpFox called “discount Toorak syndrome”.
Nrkyrox wrote: “It’s insane how Melbourne has managed to squeeze so many entitled w*nkers into the same spot.”
Only a few brave Reddit users were game to defend the suburb, and QueenPingu wrote they liked the area, though they thought their cute dog may have acted as a social lubricant.
Sir_cockington_III said people only had themselves to blame if they didn’t get along with their neighbours.
“You know what they say when everyone you meet is an ar*hole?,” they wrote.
Camberwell Place shoppers took news of the Reddit thread with good humour when questioned about it this week.

Most laughed it off.
John Dodds said he liked the area, which he said was a peaceful place to live.
Grace Scorgie, 20, said she’d lived in Camberwell her whole life.
She said she’d found in her retail job that some people with “rich people problems” liked to make a fuss over nothing, but she said most were OK.
“I wouldn’t say everybody is snobby, but there’s some elements of snobbery,” she said.
Trudy, of neighbouring Hawthorn East, who didn’t want her surname published, said she thought perhaps the older generation was partly to blame for the area’s aloof feel.
“I think there’s a certain sense of entitlement, but you get that everywhere,” she said.
“I think just as you get older … you lose a sense of what people think of you. You just don’t care as much.”
Camberwell Place shopper Geoff Tampling said he’d like to see better food options in the area, but for the most part the people, businesses and the cafes were great.
“It’s not as if people sit around (in cafes) talking about their kids’ achievements or what they’ve got,” he said.
Well PurpleScrabble, Camberwell may not be perfect but it’s home.
At least Camberwell shoppers and residents proved they have a sense of humour.
