A female police officer has been taken to hospital after a wild party, with a neighbour saying 40 youths rushed her Glen Iris block.

Police were allegedly assaulted outside a wild party in Malvern Rd, Glen Iris on January 10.
Police were allegedly assaulted outside a wild party in Malvern Rd, Glen Iris on January 10.

A resident has revealed her frightening experience after about 40 partygoers stormed her apartment complex for a wild Glen Iris party, resulting in a female police sergeant being concussed.

The party, organised by Airbnb guests, took place in an apartment on the second level of the Malvern Rd complex from the evening of January 9 until 2.30pm on January 10.

A Prahran police sergeant and another officer attended the party at 5am and were involved in an argument with the driver of a car leaving the party.

The driver and her three female passengers got out of the car and allegedly assaulted them.

The female sergeant was taken to hospital with concussion, bruising to her ribs and a sprained ankle.

She has since been discharged.

The other officer, a male constable, received minor injuries in the alleged attack.

A Melton South woman, 20, Port Cook woman, 21, Burnsdale Heights woman, 22, and Deer Park woman, 21, have been charged with multiple offences including assault police, intentionally cause injury and unlawful assault.

All four were bailed to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 29.

Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt said the incident highlighted “the challenging and dangerous environment our members are working in”.

“Despite their best efforts to treat everyone with respect, our members received none and were assaulted and injured while working to protect the community,” he said.

Resident Justine, who didn’t give her surname, described the incident as “15 hours of hell”.

She said at least two guests jumped from the apartment’s balcony and into her yard, damaging furniture and her fence.

Justine claimed her family, which includes her husband and seven-year-old son, endured a sleepless night as partygoers made noise and stumbled up and down stairs while spitting — and dropping cigarettes and tissues — on her balcony.

“There were groups coming and going from Chapel St until 7.30am, arguments and drunk driving in the street … people jumping off the balcony to escape,” Justine said.

“It was a loud, shocking, dangerous party that no one wants to happen on a Saturday night … beyond an ordinary party keeping you up all night.”

Justine claimed she called the owner of the apartment from 2am to express concerns.

She claimed the owner arrived at 8am but the final guests did not leave until 2.30pm.

“It was like there was no regard about our safety, and no avenue to follow up, we were

left to manage it on our own,” she said.

“They (police) were stuck without the ability to move these people on because they had no permission to enter the property from the owner.”

“He rented and showed no accountability, he has to be accountable to provide a safe environment in his own apartment.”

Airbnb Australia spokesman Derek Nolan said the platform had a global ban on parties at its listed properties.

He confirmed the apartment’s listing and multiple accounts had been removed as investigations continued.

“We were shocked and angered to hear of the reported behaviour – which is completely unacceptable – and stand ready to assist Victoria Police with any investigations,” he said.

“Bad behaviour has no place on Airbnb and those who wilfully fail to adhere to our policies face removal from our platform.”

Prahran police has been contacted for comment.
