A Hawthorn East dad who became a social media hit for his daily lunch bag drawings is honouring his father through a new book in time for Father’s Day.
Dave Blumenthal, aka Sandwich Bag Dad, began doing drawings on his three daughters’ lunch bags in 2012 as a daily ritual away from his finance job.
His popularity surged as teachers encouraged him to start sharing the drawings he’d done for Sharni, 15, Tia, 9 and Milly, 7 on his Instagram page, which has more than 7200 followers.
Mr Blumenthal has managed to preserve about 160 of his best drawings and dad jokes for his debut book, The Chronicles Of Sandwich Dad, which is available for presale.
“Usually they (the lunch bags) get crumpled up and thrown away, and by the time it’s had a Vegemite sandwich in it, it’s pretty worse for wear,” he said.
“As much as they roll eyes and groan these days, hopefully they (his daughters) look back and smile in the future.
“There seems to be a lot of people around the world who’ve discovered my hobby and appreciate the dad joke and smiles.”
Mr Blumenthal is donating 15 per cent of profits to the Leukaemia Foundation after his father died from the disease before his daughters were born.
“I got the dad joke fever from him, and its an opportunity to honour his legacy in some way,” he said.
