Chapel Street and Toorak Village traders confident of having enough supplies in lockdown

With many Melbourne retailers set to shut their doors for six weeks from tonight, inner east butchers and bakers are confident they’ll have enough supplies to get people through the tough lockdown.

Traders at two inner east shopping hubs are confident they will have enough essentials such as meat and bread to support Stonnington residents during the latest coronavirus lockdown.

Premier Daniel Andrews has directed all retail businesses to cease in-store trading from 11.59pm on Wednesday, August 5, in the latest set of Stage 4 restrictions within Melbourne.

Supermarkets, grocery stores, bottle shops and specialist traders such as butchers and bakers can stay open along with petrol stations, newsagents and banks.

Alison Baker, owner of Alison’s Bread and Little Corner Shop in Prahran, was confident she wouldn’t have supply issues despite the impending lockdown being “such an unknown”.

She said she would be stocked with items such as eggs, honey, milk and pies as well as her usual bakery products.

“There’s no indication so far that I won’t have supplies of all sorts of things,” she said.

“I’ve increased my orders of everything with all my suppliers, so fingers crossed.”

Meanwhile, popular Prahran Market butcher Neil’s Meats has also indicated they won’t have any problems meeting demand.

In a post on its Facebook page, the butcher said it was “business as usual” and it would get orders prepared for customers “as soon as possible”.

“If you live within a 5km radius you can still come and visit us and see us mask to mask for your regular shop,” the butcher wrote.

“If you prefer to stay home or you live past the 5km radius give us a call to discuss delivery options.

“There’s plenty of stock and we urge you not to panic buy. We will continue to do our best supporting you throughout the next six weeks of lockdown.”

Toorak Village traders association president Tony Fialides estimated about 80 per cent of the centre’s shops would close due to the new restrictions.

But he was confident those staying open would have adequate supplies and be well supported by locals.

“I feel confident the people with stick with Toorak, they’re good at shopping local and they’re loyal,” he said.

Cannings Toorak’s John Madden said the store was well stocked apart from a small shortage of chicken, which he expected to be topped up by the weekend.

He said the store would have enough stock in the next six weeks and he could rely on suppliers in other states if things got desperate.

“We’re free range, we have a lot of security stock backed up and we’ve got plenty of supplies,” Mr Madden said.
