FINDING a park at Chadstone could finally get easier after Stonnington Council gave the shopping centre the go ahead to expand the Coles carpark.
The existing carpark will be expanded to make way for 42 new spaces on ground level, and two access points reconfigured to ease traffic congestion.
There will also be a pedestrian walkway and more car spaces for parents with prams, creating easier access to the retail giant.
Shoppers spent nearly $2 billion at Chadstone last year, making it the highest-turnover shopping centre in the country.
At last night’s meeting Cr Glen Atwell said he would be pleased to see traffic jam trouble spots reduced.
Council staff noted in their report the works were “positive”, because they were unlikely to negatively affect the amenity of surrounding residential properties and would improve pedestrian safety and ease traffic flow.
In February the council approved the centre’s plans to expand one of its internal food courts by the space of about three tennis courts, and a 13-floor $130 million Sofitel hotel will be built on the site this year.
