A neighbourhood watch group wants to fill the breach the community feels has been left open after the reduced opening hours at Ashburton police station.
The Ashburton Neighbourhood Watch re-emerged late last year and is now keen to add more members.
Member Susan Cover said she was renewing the call out in the wake of reports of Ashburton police station only open 13 days out of a 70-day period last year.
“It was of great interest to us as Ashwood residents and we are all concerned,” she said.
“The police station is only open two days a week and we are also concerned about the increase of crime in Ashburton.
“We want to work on helping the police and helping to try to reduce the crime rate.”
Ms Cover said members thought it was “important to start it up again”.
