‘I think I killed her’: Ricky Wilson jailed for brutal and humiliating assault on ex-partner

A sick coward bashed his ex-partner so badly he thought he had killed her — but what the serial woman-beater did next was so vile a judge labelled his actions “gratuitous” and “morally abhorrent”.

A vile coward plotted to dispose of his ex-partner’s body after he bashed, strangled and clubbed her head with a hammer during a protracted assault, a court heard.

Ricky Wilson’s “brutal” and “humiliating” attack on his defenceless victim was so severe that

the serial woman basher thought he had killed her.

Wilson was on bail for violent crimes when he attacked his victim at the home they shared with their children in December 2015.

Wilson humiliated his victim and knocked her unconscious during the sickening ordeal.

The victim’s children heard Wilson on the phone saying “I think I killed her” and “what do I do with the body? Cause I think I killed her”.

Wilson recorded a video of his unconscious victim which was seen by her daughter.

The distraught victim reported Wilson to police in July 2017 after she fled with the children.

Wilson, 31, was sentenced at the County Court last month to a minimum three years and six months’ jail after pleading guilty to assault and intentionally causing injury.

The woman said she “cannot even begin to illustrate the repulsive monster I once knew”.

She said she “lived in fear” and now “lives in fear” of Wilson “coming to hunt her down”.

The victim said Wilson has “no remorse” and enjoyed “hurting women”.

She said Wilson called himself “Teflon Rick” because “no charges ever stick”.

The victim’s son said he was “very scared” watching his mother “get hurt and seeing her in fear”.

The victim’s daughter said she was scared to come home and “lives in fear worrying about what may happen” when Wilson is released.

Judge Frances Hogan said Wilson committed “brutal” and “cowardly” offending.

“Women must be entitled to feel safe in their own homes,” she said.

“(Your victim was) subjected to an ordeal of menace and humiliation.”

The court heard Wilson – who regularly assaulted his victim – “stomped” on her head until she was unconscious on another occasion.

“It is deeply concerning that you have repeatedly subjected your victim to controlling, humiliating and violent behaviour over a number of years,” Judge Hogan said.

“Your offending is of a gratuitous, morally abhorrent and cowardly nature towards the mother of your two children.

“Your controlling behaviour of your victim included not permitting her to attend a doctor in case evidence of your assaults upon her should be detected.”

The court heard Wilson was a target in prison because some of his extended family was “associated with the Melbourne underworld war”

Forensic and consultant psychologist Ian Mackinnon said Wilson’s poly-substance abuse disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms “probably made a significant contribution to offences”.

“It needs to be made abundantly clear that men do not own their partners,” Judge Hogan said.

“It was clearly a horrifying and protracted ordeal for your victim.

“Those children must have been filled with terror when they heard you on the telephone telling someone that you believed you had killed her and did not know what to do with her body.”

Wilson – already in prison for other charges – was jailed for a maximum five years.

Nine months of this sentence will be concurrent with his existing sentence.
