Members of a notorious bikie gang are en route to Melbourne’s southeast on its annual national run.

Hundreds of Finks OMCG members left Wodonga about 10am on Saturday to begin a 350km journey, which is being monitored by Victoria Police.

The contingent is set to roll into Melbourne mid-afternoon with the ride set to finish at its Cranbourne West clubhouse sometime after 5pm.

A handful of Finks members were seen installing outdoor marquees behind the club’s gates at lunchtime, in preparation for the riders’ arrival.

Victoria Police issued a warning to the riders earlier this week, declaring specialist units, including the Echo and VIPER task forces, would be monitoring the run to ensure the safety of all road users.

A police spokesman said extra officers would also be patrolling in relevant areas over the weekend, and would take immediate action on any criminal, road safety or public order offences they identify.

Bikie runs are seen as a tool for gangs to boost morale and demonstrate their strength to onlookers, including police and rival bikie gangs.

The Finks did a similar journey, but in the opposite direction, in January last year, which was completed without any police incidents or arrests.

Finks boss Kosh Radford declined to speak to the Herald Sun at the start of last year’s run, saying: “No, no. You don’t ever talk. You know the rules.”

The Finks attempted to increase their presence in the Gippsland region last year and established a chapter of the club with a small base, likened to a shed with a bar, in the small town of Lindenow, near Bairnsdale.

However, the club shut down the Gippsland clubhouse in November following an increased wave of police activity, which had included the arrest of the new local chapter’s president.
