One person has been injured and motorists are facing delays of more than an hour after a dramatic truck fire caused kilometres of traffic chaos on a major freeway.
All outbound lanes of West Gate Fwy are blocked near the Bolte Bridge after a truck went up in flames about 3.45pm on Friday.
Emergency services are working hard to extinguish the blaze, with dozens of firefighters on the scene.
Significant congestion is pushing back through the Domain Tunnel onto the Monash Freeway, resulting in delays of more than an hour.
Motorists already on the freeway heading towards the West Gate Bridge can pass in two lanes in the far left carriageway that leads to CityLink and Todd Rd.
Drivers travelling from the southeastern suburbs towards the airport are urged to exit before the Domain Tunnel and detouring north of the CBD, however two lanes are open at 40km/h.
Vehicles heading towards western suburbs are advised to detour via South Melbourne and Southbank and using the entry from Todd Rd to reach the West Gate Bridge.
A transport department spokesman said more lanes would be reopened when it was safe to do so.

“One member of the public suffered an injury due to a piece of shrapnel exploding from the truck while on fire,” said a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson.
