An elderly man has died in hospital after a horror crash last month which claimed the life of his female passenger.

It is believed a vehicle was travelling along the Hume Freeway near Avenel-Longwood Rd and veered off the road before crashing into a tree just after 3pm on January 20.

The front passenger, a 66-year-old Benalla woman, died at the scene.

The driver, an 82-year-old Benalla man, was taken to hospital in a critical condition where he died on Friday February 8.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The incident was one of two fatal road incidents in the Goulburn Valley that weekend, with a driver also killed in a two-car collision in Lancaster.

Emergency services responded to the collision at the intersection of Lancaster and Dunbar roads about 10.35pm.

The male driver of one of the cars died at the scene, while a male passenger was flown to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other car, an 18-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

Any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to both incidents can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report online.
