A Numurkah grub has been jailed for 18 months after a raid on his home revealed a stash of child abuse material.

Terry Gregory Woudstra, 63, pleaded guilty in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to charges of producing child abuse material and possessing of child abuse material and was jailed for 18 months.

On February 15, 2023, police went to Woudstra’s address and seized numerous tablets and laptops.

Woudstra was subsequently arrested.

The accused made full admissions in a police interview to accessing child abuse material.

Woudstra told police he did not get any sexual gratification from the material, the court heard.

Woudstra was found to be in possession of thousands of illegal images.

Some of the images found on Woudstra’s devices were of photos of pre-pubescent males fully naked, urinating, while others showed teenage boys performing sex acts, while

217 videos were also found on Woudstra’s devices, which included a Toshiba laptop.

Woudstra’s lawyer, Jacob Button, conceded the offending was “serious” but also spoke to his client’s co-operation with police as well as his obedience to strict bail conditions.

Mr Button also said there had been no allegations of distribution of the images.

Mr Button noted that the “consequences of being apprehended have acted as a great deterrent”, and pushed for a combination sentence, hoping Woudstra could serve a short-term — 30 to 60 days — in prison before completing a community corrections order.

Mr Button also noted that Woudstra had no prior criminal history.

Prosecutor Anna Hanlon noted that both charges Woudstra pleaded to face a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Magistrate Peter Dunn said “Mr Woudstra has accessed the internet and used that to feed his own interests”.

“There is a significant number of the worst category (Category 1) … There are victims who’s lives have been preyed upon … Some of these images are horrendous and horrible”, he said.

Mr Dunn said he needed to provide a sentence that would deter others from doing this while sending a message to the community.

Woudstra will be eligible for parole after serving six months.
