A speeding, unlicensed Harley-Davidson motorcyclist told police he didn’t hear or see them when they activated their sirens to pull him over.
Travis Georgopoulos, 26, pleaded guilty to driving at a dangerous speed and unlicensed driving at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, while one charge of failing to stop on police direction and one charge of careless driving of a motor vehicle were struck out.
Police saw Georgopoulos riding a black Harley-Davidson motorbike on the Midland Highway in Shepparton about 6.15pm on March 10 last year.
Police followed Georgopoulos who was speeding and overtaking cars, prompting them to activate their sirens.
The court heard Georgopoulos couldn’t hear or see the sirens so he did not stop.
Eventually Georgopoulos was pulled over and police discovered he didn’t have a motorbike licence.
Georgopoulos made full admissions to being the driver but doubted he was doing more than 100km/h.
When he was asked why he didn’t pull over when police activated their lights, Georgopoulos said at the time he didn’t see the police car.
The bike was impounded.
The court also heard Georgopoulos took the bike for a “spin” knowing he was unlicensed and was out getting petrol.
He eventually made admissions to travelling at a speed of 100km/h to 105km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Georgopoulos was also co-operative with police, the court heard.
However, Magistrate Peter Mithen said police have “better things to do” than to pull over an unlicensed driver.
Mr Mithen fined Georgopoulos $750 without conviction and has been suspended from driving for six months.
Georgopoulos will also complete a safe driving program in order to apply for a licence in the future.
