A Sheppaeton tradie and drug driver who tried to get his licence back years after losing it told a court he stopped using meth but still smoked cannabis.
Aaron Robson, 42, appeared at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for an application hearing.
The court heard Robson was busted for failing an oral fluid test that returned a reading for methamphetamine in November 2017 and lost his licence.
Robson told the court he stopped using the drug, was a father, works in construction and needs his licence for his job, but Magistrate Peter Mithen said the community took these matters seriously.
“It’s one of the most dangerous drugs going around,” Mr Mithen said.
“If you use it while on the road it’s a lethal weapon.”
Mr Mithen asked Robson if he still uses methamphetamine to which Robson said he does not.
However, Robson revealed he was using cannabis.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Luke Lund asked Robson when he last used the drug and Robson said last week.
Mr Lund questioned why Robson was trying to get his licence back if he was using cannabis, considering it stays in the system for a while.
Robson told Mr Lund that if he gets his licence back he wouldn’t use cannabis “at all” and made the application to get his licence back at the start of the year.
Mr Lund asked why Robson didn’t stop taking cannabis at that time and Robson said he was trying to get a medical exemption for the drug.
Robson also said he is not “addicted” to it.
While Mr Mithen accepted Robson’s honesty, he said Robson would be putting the community at risk and refused his application.
