Don't miss out on the headlines from Goulburn Valley. Followed categories will be added to My News.
For anyone who has spent time in Shepparton, you might have wondered: is Shepparton the kebab capital of Australia?
You can’t drive more than a couple of minutes without spotting a vendor which sells them. In fact, there are eight different places you can get kebabs from in this town. That’s right – eight.
And even though the offering has reduced in recent months (two kebab stores have shut their doors), and three of the eight belong to the same chain, there is still enough variety to keep kebab fans happy.

So The Goulburn Valley Newsdid the job no one else has dared to do. We tasted the six different renditions of lamb wrapped tightly with flat bread.
And we kept it consistent – each was accompanied by a lettuce, tomato and onion salad, and a lashing of garlic sauce.
Kebab Boyz
Location: Riverside Plaza, Kialla.
The lamb was succulent and flavoursome, and the salad was the ideal fresh accompaniment.
It was doused with a generous amount of garlic sauce and the bread had an almost wood-fired aroma.
Put it all together, and this kebab was undoubtedly one all would enjoy.
Shepparton Kebabs
Location: High St, Shepparton.
The kebab store named after its town has big expectations attached, and boy, did it deliver.
The flavours were aplenty and the lamb was seasoned well with good ‘chewiness’.
A welcome amount of onion gave it that desired bite, rounding out a great kebab experience.
Mustafa’s Kebabs
Locations: Numurkah Rd, Shepparton North; Vaughn St, Shepparton; Wyndham St, Shepparton.
Mustafa is the kebab man about town, with three locations – including a drive-through south of the CBD.
It would be a challenge to keep the flavours consistent between stores, but Mustafa’s Kebabs shows anything is possible.
This kebab was balanced in combination of lamb, salad and garlic sauce, making it one easily enjoyed.
Healthy Choice Kebabs
Location: Shepparton Marketplace, Shepparton.
A real meatlovers kebab, every single bite of this was filled with lamb.
The soft bread that wrapped around the filling was there as if just to hold everything together and save you from making a mess.
While the meaty filling was the main attraction there was enough lettuce, onion and tomato to balance out the experience.
There was also just enough – but not too much – garlic sauce in this to keep everything inside moist, but not sloppy.
Nedal’s Restaurant (Shepparton)
Location: High St, Shepparton.
Nedal Restaurant is Shepparton’s favourite Syrian restaurant, and so the lamb sharwarma is slightly different to the standard offering at other kebab restaurants.
While similar to a kebab, the lamb is cooked based on a method which originated in the Middle East.
But you can’t fault the taste – it’s just as good.
If you’re looking for some variety, this may be the one to try.
Mustafa’s Gozleme (Shepparton)
Location: Wyndham St, Shepparton.
Also owned by Mustafa, the lamb shish from his restaurant is a twist on his much-loved classic.
The meat is charcoal grilled instead of shaved off a rotating spit.
The method gives the meat a juicy texture, and it’s nonetheless a scrumptious choice.
