The mother of a Rushworth man whose life has been plagued by crime and stints behind bars has delivered an emotional spiel in court as he was sentenced to another stint in jail.

Jason Arthur Garvey, who appeared in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday via video link from prison, was sentenced to 14 months’ prison for a raft of charges including drug trafficking and theft of a motor vehicle.

Garvey’s mother Barbara sobbed as she told the court that her son finally acknowledged that “he needs psychiatric help” to deal with his mental health issues.

Magistrate Victoria Campbell told Garvey as she sentenced him, “I don’t know what it’s going to take … I hope at some point the penny drops.”

Ms Campbell acknowledged the trauma Garvey has suffered in his life but also said that “it remains a concern to me that you have served periods of imprisonment and within months of your release you have reoffended.

The court heard that Garvey has missed funerals of loved ones due to being incarcerated, with Ms Campbell acknowledging how difficult that must have been for him.

“You are going to kill yourself or kill someone else,’’ she said.

“You’re too young to be spending the majority of your life in custody.”

Garvey had previously served a a four year stretch for firing a sawn-off shot gun out of his car before bashing a man who owed him a drug debt.

Ms Campbell also ordered Garvey to serve a 12 month community corrections order upon his release from prison.

Garvey has already served 158 days in pre-sentenced detention which will be counted as time served.
