Members of a well-known Cobram family have been exposed living the life of luxury on the profits of their bikie-linked cocaine syndicate that supplied the entire Goulburn Valley.
One-time Mongols OMCG sergeant-at-arms Josh Eddy pleaded guilty at the Melbourne County Court on Tuesday to running a cocaine trafficking family out of his Cobram home and business Cartel Auto Detailing on Colgan St.
Joshua was the “apex of the distribution syndicate” he ran in Cobram, employing several member of the Eddy family, including his sister Jaide and father David, to deal cocaine across the Goulburn Valley between October 2020 and July 2021, the court heard.
Police raids on properties owned by the Eddy family revealed 2.5kg of cocaine and 1kg of methamphetamine.
The drugs were found in vacuum-sealed bags concealed in a false wall behind a refrigerator at the Gemmill St home shared by father and daughter.
David was also busted on the Cobram-Barooga bridge that morning with about $100,000 in drug money and a loaded gun in the car.
David’s role was to stash drugs and money at the home while Jaide was used to traffic the coke “to avert police attention from other syndicate members” when Joshua knew the heat was on the drug dealing ring.
His uncle Shane and his cousin Matthew were also charged with trafficking cocaine in the syndicate, with Shane busted with “large amounts of cash” and Matthew was caught out in telephone intercepts.
Matthew was jailed in August for his role in a savage gang bashing at the Cobram Hotel.
Joshua’s partner Kayla Eddy, his uncle Shane’s daughter, was also charged with trafficking after living in luxury on the drug money the family was bringing in.
The bikie also kept drugs at of his ex-wife Tanane Barrett’s house where his two sons lived.
Cobram residents suspected nothing prior to Joshua’s arrest, as the gang enforcer maintained the facade of a “polite and nice” local businessman.
However, Echo Taskforce detectives revealed Joshua to be a sergeant-at-arms in Mongols OMCG Riverside chapter, based in Echuca, and was selling drugs out of the Cobram business.
The raids came after telephone intercepts, police surveillance and undercover operations, with the Eddy syndicate selling hundreds of grams of cocaine to undercover cops.
Surveillance revealed Cartel Auto Detailing as the “main syndicate hub” used by Joshua for drug trafficking activities, social gatherings involving drug use, and for the storage of drugs and cash.
The Eddy family was caught out “enjoying a substantially luxurious lifestyle” with “excessive wealth” they couldn’t have afforded normally.
In raids police seized $32,000 in drug money, and luxury items bought with drug money including designer clothes, gold jewellery with Mongols insignias, and expensive cars – with a 2016 Range Rover Sport, Holden Colorado ute and a Harley Davidson seized.
Joshua Eddy was also caught out running drugs interstate for the Mongols as a “middleman”, hiring and directing lower level dealers and couriers.
The syndicate moved 9.974kg of methamphetamine from New South Wales to Western Australia, where it was seized alongside $888,650 of cash.
Investigators believe the interstate trafficking was controlled by “high-ranking Melbourne based” members of the Mongols OMCG, but couldn’t prove anything against bosses higher up the pyramid.
David Eddy pleaded to trafficking cocaine, proceeds of crime and gun charges. He was jailed on November 23, 2022 to three years in prison with a non parole period of 22 months.
Jaide Eddy pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine, and her case was discharged by the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on July 11, 2022 after completing a diversion program.
Kayla Eddy pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine and dealing with the proceeds of crime. She was fined $2500 without conviction on November 23, 2022 at Cobram Magistrates’ Court.
Shane Eddy pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine. He was convicted and fined $4000 on September 20, 2022 at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.
Matthew Eddy pleaded guilty to attempting to traffic GHB. He was convicted and sentenced to a 14-month Community Corrections order and fined $750 on 19 July, 2022 at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.
Joshua Eddy, who has spent 1016 days in custody since his arrest, told the court in a letter he had since abandoned his Mongols OMCG membership, with his barrister arguing he had shown “heartfelt remorse”.
Joshua will be sentenced in January, facing a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $1.6m fine.
