A 68-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck by a car at Strathmerton, north of Shepparton.

Victoria Police say the man was walking along Numurkah Road, near Reynoldsons Road, when he was hit by a car travelling south about 9.40pm on Wednesday night.

The man died at the scene.

The driver, a 42-year-old man from Strathmerton, stopped at the scene and is assisting police.

Numurkah Road was closed in both directions early Thursday while Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives investigate the incident.
