Man dead after van and car collided near Shepparton in Goulburn Valley

A man has been killed following a horror crash near Shepparton, as police probe the circumstances of the collision.

A man has died following a horror collision near Shepparton on Thursday morning.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision in Girgarre about 8am.

Emergency services were called to the corner of McEwen and Winter roads to reports of a collision between a van and a car.

A police spokesperson said the 19-year-old male driver of the cleaning van, who was from Queensland, died at the scene.

Early investigations lead police to believe the male driver could have failed to give way at the intersection.

Ambulance Victoria also attended and the female driver of the green car was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the van died at the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

“Unfortunately it’s just the speed and that lack of attention and this is what it causes,” a police spokesperson on scene said.

The crash took place near a small bridge and creek, and the green car was pushed into the water.

It has since been pulled from the creek.

The female driver of the green car was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the vehicle was removed from the creek.

Police remained on scene to control oncoming traffic.

The van was towed from the scene just after 11.30am with the assistance of police.

The scene was cleared about 11.40am.
