A bank employee nabbed more than $63,000 from clients’ accounts, including from a 95-year-old WWII veteran, while working for one of the Big Four.
Kuol Mawien Kuol appeared via video link for a guilty plea in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, admitting to drug, driving and theft offences dating from 2020 to 2022.
The court heard the 26-year-old stole more than $63,000 from NAB customers during his time working at the Shepparton and Kyabram branches.
Kuol accessed customer information and transferred funds from multiple customer accounts — including those of local businesses and a WWII veteran — to his own bank accounts from November 2020 to May 2021.
NAB has since refunded all the victims in full and is seeking restitution costs from Kuol.
Kuol was also charged with two driving offences on New Year’s Eve in 2020 and on January 8, 2021.
The court heard Kuol was speeding on both occasions before being pulled over by police.
Kuol, who was suspended from driving at the time, gave police his soccer star brother Garang Kuol’s license instead of his own.
Garang Kuol plays for Australia’s Under 23s squad.
Also included in his guilty plea were a slew of drug charges including being involved in a drug deal with an undercover police officer and a Facebook marketplace scam for a Play Station 5.
Kuol is also facing bail charges after he failed to report to the Footscray police station and instead got another individual to impersonate him.
The court proceedings were adjourned by Magistrate Adriano Serratore and will continue on May 22.
