Driver injured and dozens of sheep killed following truck roll over on Warren St, Echuca

Echuca motorists have faced confronting scenes after a truck flipped on its side, killing almost 100 sheep, with the survivors causing traffic chaos.

The driver of a truck that was carrying 300 livestock has been injured after his vehicle rolled over, killing almost 100 sheep in the state’s north

The B-double was heading through a roundabout on Warren St in Echuca just before 11.30am on Wednesday when the incident happened.

The driver believed to be in his 40s, was taken to Echuca Hospital with minor injuries.

The sheep that survived the crash caused traffic issues in the area as they wandered from the scene.

Echuca Acting Sergeant Scott Newton said it was believed the truck was turning west and went around the roundabout.

“We do have witnesses that have seen the accident and believe the truck wasn’t actually going too fast — approximately 10km/h an hour,” Acting Sergeant Newton said.

“We think it’s just due to livestock moving while going around a roundabout that has caused the truck to overturn.

“At this stage we estimate approximately about 60-100 sheep have died but unable to confirm exact numbers at this stage.”

Acting Sergeant Newton also said the driver was taken to hospital for a general check-up and had no major injuries.

“He just had a little bit of shock,” he said.

“The general message is accidents can occur and just to be safe on the roads at all times.”

He added the surviving sheep were taken to a neighbouring property where they will remain for 24 hours due to trauma from the incident.

Police and towing services remained on scene for most of the afternoon and the truck was flipped back onto its wheels just before 2.30pm.
