Cobram’s Jye Ellis sentenced over horrific pub brawl

A young concreter who threw a chair in a brutal pub brawl which left a victim unconscious has been sentenced.

A young Cobram concreter has been sentenced for his role in a savage pub brawl which left a man on the floor unconscious.

Jye Ellis, 20, was sentenced in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to affray and assault with company following the savage fight.

On November 11, 2023, Ellis — alongside three other thugs — launched a devastating and vicious attack on Robert McPherson and Dale Curry who were drinking at the Cobram Hotel.

In the terrifying CCTV vision played to the court, Ellis could be seen throwing a chair when the brawl kicked off, before later wrestling and punching Mr Curry.

At an earlier court appearance, the court heard Ellis did not contribute to the injury suffered by Mr McPherson, who after being knocked unconscious had a seizure.

Three of the thugs handed themselves into police shortly after the brawl.

Ellis was supported in court by his partner and his partner’s mother and received support from his family at previous court appearances.

Ellis’ lawyer Simon Pogue told the court his client had shown remorse, had entered an early plea and had a lack of relevant priors.

The court heard Ellis had stopped using drugs and gambling since the offending.

Magistrate Amina Bhai told the court Ellis’ offending was “serious” and placed him on an adjourned undertaking for 18 months without conviction.

He must seek counselling in regards to alcohol and anger management.

Ms Bhai said he must provide evidence to the court he had engaged in that treatment.

He also must donate $1500 to the court fund.

If Ellis does not comply with the rules of the undertaking, he could be resentenced.

Matthew Eddy, the leader of the assault, was sentenced to four months prison after savagely kicking Mr McPherson in the head while he was getting up.
