A woman who allegedly struck a pedestrian as she was driving through a roundabout and fled the scene, later googled “manslaughter” and searched for parts for her car, a court has heard.

Brodie Webber — who works as a pizza delivery driver — appeared at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday on charges of reckless driving causing serious injury, drive in a dangerous manner, fail to render assistance after accident, fail to give name and address to injured, negligently cause serious injury and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

On June 28 last year just before 2pm, police alleged the 36-year old was travelling on Hay where she

allegedly accelerated while driving through a roundabout while a male pedestrian was crossing.

The court heard Webber did not slow down when she saw the man and allegedly struck him with her vehicle, causing it to spin out, the court heard.

It’s also alleged Webber did not stop to check on the victim and fled from the scene.

Police and Ambulance Victoria arrived shortly after and attended to the victim and spoke to witnesses.

The court heard about 2.15pm that day, police located Webber who nominated herself as the driver, who was then arrested and transferred to the Shepparton police station.

She allegedly told police at the time she had to stop at the roundabout to give way to her right and the victim stepped out onto the road while she was passing through the roundabout and her left rear view mirror was broken off.

Webber also heard a “thump” and was unsure whether she had hit the victim, the court heard.

She told police she was “shaking” and “scared”, believing she hit a sign and not a “person”.

Officers examined Webber’s phone, where it’s alleged she searched up “manslaughter” on the web and parts to her vehicle.

“Can you buy a mirror for a Holden Commodore,” her google search results revealed.

“I googled them because I didn’t know what would really happen,” Webber allegedly told police.

However, she then told them she was just checking “Facebook”.

Webber’s lawyer claimed Webber had “misjudged” the distance from where the victim was coming from and that there was no pedestrian crossing, giving Webber the “right of way”.

Her lawyer also told the court it could be considered “careless driving” instead of “dangerous driving” and he added she had no prior criminal history.

He said Webber still had her licence and delivered pizzas for her work, which she would loose if her licence was suspended.

The court heard Webber also had one child in her full time care.

Magistrate Alexandra Burt said it was a “serious offence” and there still would’ve been “considerable distance” when looking right to give way at a roundabout.

Ms Burt said Webber will likely be assessed for a Community Corrections Order if she enters a plea.

The matter was adjourned for a contested hearing in February next year.
