Two power players in the energy business are offering cash rewards for households who cut down on electricity use in summer.

The Energy Partner program, a joint project by CitiPower and Powercor, offers participating clients $20 cash each time they successfully reduce their electricity use for up to three hours on selected days.

As part of the program, customers will have a smart device installed in their air conditioners, allowing CitiPower and Powercor to temporarily adjust temperatures during that period.

The program aims to reduce energy demand in some areas during extreme temperatures.

CitiPower and Powercor’s marketing and community partnerships manager, Ruchkia Deora, said the program helped to ensure reliable electricity supply for local residents.

This year the program is open to households in Glen Eira, Port Phillip, Boroondara, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton and Greater Geelong.

Last year, more than 1060 people in the Bellarine Peninsula took park, sharing in over $50,000 of rewards.

On one day alone participants helped save 474kW — enough electricity to power more than 200 homes.

Sheena Walters, who took part last year, said she didn’t have to sacrifice comfort to take part.

“On days when events took place, we would go out and spend time together as a family,” she said.

“If we were at home during an event, we could pre-cool the house remotely using the device, as we were always given plenty of notice that events were taking place.”

People living in participating areas can sign up to the Energy Partner program online until March 31.
