Emrah Avder remanded after allegedly assaulting officer and damaging a police car

A 35-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a police officer, rammed a police car and led police on a chase through Broadmeadows has faced court.

A man has been remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting a police officer, ramming a police car and leading officers on a car chase through Broadmeadows this month.

Emrah Avder, 35, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from custody on Thursday.

Police had earlier said officers had moved to intercept a vehicle on Smiley Road about 1.20pm Wednesday after it was identified as being involved in an alleged incident during which two officers’ were driven at and their police car rammed earlier in the month.

The male driver, alleged to be Avder, allegedly sped off and was pursued by police on the ground as he sped through Broadmeadows and Dallas.

The police Airwing was also deployed to assist.

It is alleged the driver returned to Smiley Road, abandoned the car and fled in another.

This car was intercepted by police on Widford Street about 3.25am where the male driver and a female passenger were arrested.

Court documents show Avder has been charged with 13 offences including assault and intentionally injuring an acting police sergeant on July 9, as well as the alleged ramming and reckless driving while disqualified.

He has also been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, reckless conduct and driving while disqualified over the incident this week.

His lawyer did not make an application for him to be bailed.

He will return to court in August.
