Machete-wielding thief arrested over Sunshine carjacking

An unemployed man has admitted threatening a homeless woman with a machete to steal a car she borrowed to store her belongings.

Levi Jones, 23, of Echuca, pleaded guilty in the Koori Court on Tuesday to a charge of carjacking using a weapon and another of theft of petrol.

Jones approached a 44-year-old woman with four kids who had been using a friend’s car to store her belongings on Dickson St in Sunshine about 12.55am on May 22 this year.

She was approached as she went to retrieve personal items. Jones said to her “get out and give me the keys” while holding a machete.

Victoria Police’s Air Wing spotted the car, a 2006 Holden HSV Senator, a short time later on Ballarat Rd as Jones made his way to Gisborne, before dumping the car on Frith St and jumping over fences at nearby homes, briefly slipping and falling. He could be seen wearing sneakers, jeans and a cap as he jumps onto the roof of one.

Police arrested him on Beech Crt less than an hour after the ordeal and found the machete inside Holden.

Jones refused to attend the Melbourne Magistrates' Court where he initially appeared in May. His lawyer told the court her client was quite distressed in custody, and had been unable to sleep because it was too bright in the rooms with the lights permanently on. She said her client suffered from ADHD and bipolar disorder and was instructed that he was not currently taking medication.

Jones will be sentenced at a later date.
