THE immediate future of the Yarra Valley Country Club redevelopment in Bulleen could be known within six weeks, a project manager has said.

Linked Solutions executive director Charles Pick told the Leader last week the next step for the redevelopment was to get an independent planning panel set up to provide necessary State Government approvals.

The project will see about 217 two and three-storey townhouses built on the site of the old Yarra Valley Country Club in Templestowe Rd.

Plans include turning over up to 16ha of the subject site to community sporting facilities and a “missing link” for the Main Yarra Cycling and Walking Trail, previously broken by the country club’s golf course which is owned by Melbourne business identity Bruce Mathieson.

The sporting facilities are set to provide a crucial lifeline to three local soccer clubs who will likely have to vacate near-by Bulleen Park for the North East Link project.

Templestowe United Football Club members say the Yarra Valley Country Club development is the “only light” they see to having a new home if Bulleen Park is swallowed up by the North East Link.

Templestowe United, Manningham United and the Veneto Club — home to FC Bulleen Lions — are all backing the plans but are worried they won’t come to fruition before they’re forced out of Bulleen Park, leaving them homeless for a period.

Mr Pick, a former Manningham mayor, said “complex land swaps” meant stakeholders, including the State Government and Manningham Council, had to be on the same page.

He said the process of making planning scheme amendments to facilitate the project had been protracted.

“We’re patient but what’s been hardest is the multiple legislative changes along the way,” he said.

“We’re expecting an announcement in the near future, hopefully in the next six weeks.”

Mr Pick said aspects of the project — including a “building footprint” on the subject site of just 10 per cent — had seen it gain strong support in the community.

Templestowe United president John Biondo said the club needed certainty about its future.

“The only light we see right now is the Yarra Valley Country Club redevelopment,” he said.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the Government was waiting to consider a council planning scheme amendment.
