A man accused of stealing cars and bolting from a breath-testing site before reaching estimated speeds of 200km/h has been arrested.

Whitehorse detectives tracked down the 30-year-old man, of no fixed address, in Lysterfield about noon Wednesday while investigating alleged car thefts in the area.

Whitehorse detective Acting Sergeant Simone Carter said the man was suspected of three alleged car thefts, including a white Kia Rio stolen in Clyde on August 7.

Officers saw the Kia in Lysterfield on Wednesday and arrested the man not far from the car.

The man has been linked to two other outstanding alleged car thefts in the Blackburn area on September 6.

Acting Sgt Carter said the man was also accused of failing to stop in an allegedly stolen car at a breath-testing site in the Buxton area in the early hours of September 8.

The incident led to a high-speed pursuit in which the man escaped from police, with officers alleging he was driving at an estimated 200km/h at one point.

Acting Sgt Carter said the man was charged with three counts of alleged car theft, allegedly driving unlicensed, and alleged deception and conduct endangering lives.

He faced the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning and was further remanded to face the court again on October 21.
