A MASSIVE “gateway” tower that could be used as a hotel is proposed as the premier feature of the Westfield Doncaster redevelopment.

The tower would soar about 10 to 14 storeys above street level in Williamsons Rd, with a two-level podium at street level.

Westfield has been buying land behind its huge Doncaster complex as it prepares for expansion

Manningham Council is advertising a revised proposal after owners Scentre Group expanded its plans when it bought land in nearby Westfield Drive earlier this year.

Scentre Group has told council the tower “will likely contain commercial uses such as offices, suites or hotel-type uses”.

The plans for the site at 20-34 Westfield Drive include a mix of carparking at the lower levels and dining, entertainment, leisure and retail shops at the upper levels.

The plans will result in an extra 43,000sq m of retail shops and 18,000sq m of commercial offices, unchanged from when the proposal was first released in June.

Westfield is also proposing:

— AN enhanced and expanded bus interchange at street level, closer to Williamsons Rd with provision for buses to do a loop within the interchange.

— RELOCATING the existing main vehicle entrance from Williamsons Rd to Westfield Drive.

— IMPROVED public spaces, including increased landscaping, new paving, and a new public forecourt that will enhance the entry to the centre.

— AN extra 2793 parking spaces, bringing the total number to 7575.

Scentre Group is proposing the development occur in three stages, with construction of all stages to take three years to complete.

Public submissions can be made until November 27 with the council likely to meet in February to consider the submissions before handing them over to an independent planning panel appointed by the State Government.

Westfield has been contacted for comment.
