A volunteer basketball coach is driving a push for better parking at a busy Chadstone stadium after he was slapped with a parking fine.

Raph Cossa has accused Monash Council of providing “woefully inadequate” parking at Waverley Basketball Stadium, which accommodates games on six courts, a community centre with leisure activities, two sporting ovals and cricket nets.

The Timberwolves Basketball Club volunteer was coaching his daughter’s game at the stadium, and parked on a nature strip at Power Ave and Batesford Rd for about 45 minutes.

When he came back to his car he had a $126.40 fine.

Mr Cossa said the available parking at these times was “woefully inadequate”.

“On this occasion there was no other alternative parking option available, for myself and the numerous other cars who had parked on the nature strip,” he said.

“Monash Council must make improving the parking at Waverley Basketball Stadium a priority, and in the meantime suggest parking inspectors to show some consideration to the constraints of the parking.”

POOL DECISION DEFENDED

Monash Mayor Cr Stuart James said the parking inspector had told the council legal parking was available at the time Mr Cossa was fined on July 20 last year and the position of the father’s car would likely obscure vision for motorists entering the roundabout at the intersection.

“Our experience tells us that the current parking arrangements are adequate on the basis that we rarely receive complaints and compliance with the relevant parking controls in surrounding streets is generally good,” Cr James said.
