A vicious dog and its “unremorseful” owner are on the loose after a border collie was attacked outside the Warrandyte pub.
Police are calling for help to find the grey american staffordshire terrier and his allegedly aggressive owner after the horrifying Yarra St incident at 9.40pm on December 18.
Warrandyte police Sergeant Stewart Henderson said police were worried about the risk the pair posed to others, and needed help to find the duo.
Sgt Henderson said the attack left the border collie needing surgery, and its distressed owners with a $1300 vet bill.
He said three people were dining outside The Grand Hotel with their dog at their side, when an unrestrained staffy attacked the border collie.
“It just launched and grabbed hold of this dog that was not doing anything,” Sgt Henderson said.
He said the “aggressive” dog locked its jaws around the border collie’s neck and bit into the pup’s abdomen.
The attacking dog had to be pulled off the border collie, which left one of the diners scratched, he said.
Sgt Henderson said the owner of the offending dog tied it to a pole before he allegedly became aggressive and confronted the diners.
He said the man got “right up in the face” of the other pet owner.
“It almost blew up into an assault,” Sgt Henderson said.
“It looked like he was going to punch him.”
The man took the staffy and left the scene without giving his details.

Sgt Henderson said while dog attacks happened — and the offending dog should have been on-lead — police were most concerned by its owners’ actions.
“It was quite serious,” he said.
“It appears he’s unremorseful for his dog.
“If the dog has this capacity and the owner’s not being responsible it might happen again.”
Police have released images of a man they believe can help with their inquiries.
