Transdev’s new buses have improved safety features

Manningham commuters frustrated with the condition of old buses on their routes are enjoying the progressive roll-out of new vehicles. Here’s what they feature.

More priority seating, better disabled access, improved CCTV and Wi-Fi capabilities will all be features on new buses expected to be rolled out across Manningham in coming months.

The State Government is rolling out about 100 new vehicles as part of its plan to improve passengers’ experiences on routes travelling into the city from Bulleen and Doncaster.

The delivery of new buses constitutes the single biggest order of replacement buses in Victoria for more than 25 years.

About 86 are now operating or expected to hit roads around Melbourne by the end of the year, with the balance to be picking up passengers not later than next July.

The Victorian-built buses are expected to produce fewer emissions as well as offering improved passenger safety and comfort.

Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne said: “These new buses give passengers a range of features, including low floors and expanded priority seating to help people with mobility issues get around easier.”

“They also feature USB ports to charge phones and improved CCTV cameras to boost safety.”

The new buses will complement the busway being built for the North East Link project.

The busway will strengthen the existing public transport link with dedicated lanes on the northern side of the Eastern Freeway into the city.

The Leader reported in July that Manningham Council wants the busway to transition to Doncaster rail.

Manningham Mayor Cr Paula Piccinini said demand for bus services between the municipality and the city was growing.

“Overcrowding and delays are a daily occurrence when travelling on the busy bus corridor from Doncaster Rd and it’s only getting worse,” she said.
