It began as a gag, quickly became a meme and three years later still has the community abuzz. But is there any weight to the long-running calls for a Watsonia wine bar?

Watsonia locals would welcome a proposed wine bar to the shopping strip.

It started as a joke but a satirical call for a wine bar in Watsonia is gathering some serious buzz.

Satirical online newspaper The Watsonia Bugle first reported in 2017 on the possibilities of development on a disused shopfront on Watsonia Road.

This caused excitement among residents as they speculated on the prospects of how the shopping strip could be improved upon by opening a wine bar.

The long-running wine bar narrative quickly became a meme, with the Bugle reporting on hopeful possibilities every time a new development popped up.

Leader Newspapers also put out a call to ask readers if a wine bar was what the Watsonia shopping strip needed.

Readers reacted positively to the hypothetical wine bar and said it would be great.

“I’ve been saying this for years,” Adriana Di Maggio said.

Readers also suggested other additions to the shopping strip, such as a newsagent, specialty coffee roasters and a party supply shop.

“I would prefer to have a supermarket that is open later than 8pm in Watsonia,” Normandy Calma said.

Banyule council said they had not received any liquor applications at present.

Leader reached out to the Watsonia Bugle for comment but they did not respond.
