Hundreds of card sharks are sharpening their skills ahead of the Waverley Bridge Club’s annual championships.

The qualifying events for the first of a series of tournaments start this week for night competition, with day games to start on February 3.

The club, which has more than 800 members, is also promoting the benefits of the game to newcomers.

Member Tim Lewinski said the club had a diverse demographic and was the biggest cards club in Victoria.

“Bridge is a stimulating, social card game played by many different nationalities and more than 60 million people around the world,” he said.

“It can be played on a social or competitive level, through events or tournaments, and is still one of the most popular card games in the world.

New members can choose from sessions across six days a week that cater for different levels of experience.

A beginners’ course will also be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in March for those who’ve never played before who need some tuition before entering rookie-level competition.

Mr Lewinski said cards helped people stay mentally alert as they get older.

“Bridge is a magnificent way to keep your mental awareness active, while you are meeting new people and enjoying a great card game,” he said.
