SHOPPERS will be in retail heaven with 240 shops and food outlets making up the almost $500 million revamp of The Glen shopping centre
Co-owners Vicinity Centres and Perron Group unveiled the grand plans today to transform the 50-year-old centre with the first stage of the $490 million project, the Fresh Food Market Hall, opening by the end of the year.
Supermarket giant Aldi, with Woolworths and Coles, will anchor the hall with boutique food retailers also in the mix.
Another food precinct, Food Gallery, will be filled with restaurants and cafes across two-levels, overlooking the Town Square to be open day and night.
Shoppers will be treated to a 8000sq m David Jones with 240 retailers covering 78,000sq m.
Vicinity Centres chief executive Angus McNaughton said the community had “been crying out for The Glen to evolve and change”.
“The new Glen will elevate the customer experience to create a boutique destination where foods, fashion and people come together,” he said.
“The redevelopment is inspired by international trends and the latest store fit-outs.”
Despite also owning Chadstone Shopping Centre, Mr McNaughton said shoppers would not be pulled away from Chadstone as it would not compete with the larger centre.
Perron Group chief executive officer Ross Robertson said the redevelopment was about delivering a boutique and well-crafted design as inspired by the community.
Industry Minister Wade Noonan said about 2350 jobs would be created with 1150 construction jobs and 1200 ongoing retail and hospitality positions.
“This will be young people, part-timer workers and create great outcomes for our local community,” he said.
The centre will also house 539 apartments across three towers, between 12 to 20-storeys, at the Springvale and High Street roads corner site.
The redevelopment will be completed by early 2020.
