If you’ve ever fancied living above a shopping centre, this is the development for you.
Work is complete at Vicinity Centres’ first residential project, the Golden Age Group’s $450 million three-tower luxury residential address, Sky Garden, atop The Glen shopping centre in Glen Waverley.
Sky Garden is Australia’s biggest residential project built over a retail destination, and has more than 500 apartments, which will be home to about 1500 residents, as well as a 4000 sq m rooftop garden.
The landmark project has remained Australia’s largest air-rights development since Vicinity sold the air rights above The Glen to Golden Age Group for $60 million in 2017.
Joe Quattrone is one of the first residents to move in, and said he was loving his second-floor apartment.
He said the location ticked all the boxes for him.
“My work is just minutes walk away, that was one of the things that appealed to me, and also the appearance of the buildings,” he said.
“The way it has been designed and the interior is beautifully done.
“I really just fell in love with this place and the gardens.
“You look out from my apartment and I’ve got a nice size balcony and the garden is just absolutely spectacular.”
Mr Quattrone said being so close to The Glen and nearby restaurants has also been appealing.
“When I looked at it all, I’ve got Coles, Woolies, all the stores I want, and also restaurants,” he said.
“I actually don’t cook much – I only cook twice a week now.”
The development is also home to a gym, 25m swimming pool, steam room, library and bigger entertainment rooms where residents can host larger groups.
And similar residential developments at shopping centres across Melbourne are on the way.
Vicinity’s chief executive officer and managing director Grant Kelley said: “The completion of Vicinity’s first residential mixed-use project is a significant milestone in our strategy to take advantage of our centres’ great locations around Australia.”
Vicinity’s chief development officer Carolyn Viney said: “Across the country key centres in thriving suburbs have a high potential for mixed-use developments and across 2020 we’ve progressed planning of another six mixed-used projects at Chadstone, Box Hill, Sunshine, Bayside in Frankston and Bankstown in Sydney.”
