A much-loved family eatery in Glen Waverley has shut its doors until further notice, with speculation mounting over whether it will ever reopen.

The Pancake Parlour at Glen Waverley’s Century City Walk, which operated for more than a decade, has been shut for several months since the stage 4 coronavirus lockdown.

The Leader visited the restaurant on Wednesday and saw a shutdown notice on the eatery’s door window saying: “Due to new government restrictions, we’ve unfortunately had to close our restaurant indefinitely”.

There were chairs stacked up on tables inside the eatery, but all fixtures appeared to remain in place.

On the restaurant’s website, it states both the Glen Waverley and Docklands locations were temporarily shut.

It comes as other nearby fast food joints also shut their doors in recent weeks including Hungry Jacks in Ringwood and McDonalds at Knox City.

In 2017, The Pancake Parlour in Dandenong has shut up shop after 31 years of trading.

Glen Waverley Traders Association president Christo Christophidis said he was devastated to hear of the closure.

The restaurant has sat empty for months.

“What a shame, it’s an institution in Glen Waverley. It’s been a focal point for late-night crowds,” Mr Christophidis said.

He said at least 20 per cent of businesses had shut on Kingsway, Glen Waverley.

“Some have reopened to be fair, but we’ve lost a lot this year and now we’re starting a social media campaign to encourage people to shop local.”

Pancake Parlour chief executive Mandy David said restaurant chain was a family-owned business and like many Victorian businesses suffered greatly through a tough and extended lockdown.

“Whilst we are grateful for the support of our lovely loyal customers and the people of Victoria for supporting us over the past eight weeks, like most – we are not out of the woods yet,” Ms David said.

“The recent situation in Western Australia is a timely reminder that the situation can change rapidly. We are progressing on recruiting and training Victorians to boost our team numbers to pre-covid levels as we begin to recover.

“As we can afford to open more locations we will.”
