State government to consider red-light camera on Rosanna Rd following community push

A COMMUNITY group is pushing for red light cameras to be installed on a busy arterial road to catch dangerous drivers running the gauntlet in Rosanna.

A COMMUNITY group is pushing for red-light cameras to be installed on a busy arterial road to catch dangerous drivers running the gauntlet in Rosanna.

Cars and trucks are regularly running red lights along Rosanna Rd, which bears the brunt of thousands of cars using it as a link between the Metropolitan Ring Rd and the Eastern Freeway.

The lives of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users are at risk and Resolve Rosanna’s Natasha Reifschneider is urging the State Government to install the cameras as a vital safety measure.

Ms Reifschneider said it was extremely dangerous and the most problematic sections on Rosanna Rd are the intersections with Banyule Rd, Station Rd, Darebin Rd and Lower Plenty Rd.

The lack of red-light and speed cameras has resonated with the community and many people have aired their frustration on the Resolve Rosanna Rd Facebook page.

Tonino Rocca shared his frightening experience where a car almost bowled him over at the Banyule Rd intersection after it ran a red light. “Lucky I noticed it wasn’t going to slow down before I stepped on to the road,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Belinda Pryse wrote she witnessed a truck run a red light at the Station St intersection two weeks ago.

A Departmemt of Justice and Regulation spokesman said a committee, made up of representatives from Victoria Police, VicRoads and the Department of Justice and Regulation, determined where road safety cameras went.

This was based on the location’s crash history, road type and suitability of the site for a fixed camera.

The spokesman said the committee was currently considering a submission for a red-light camera at Rosanna Rd, Rosanna.

The spokesman said cameras played an important role in changing driver behaviour and keeping roads safe.

“Every two hours someone is killed or suffers from serious, life changing injuries as a result of road trauma,” the spokesman said.

“Motorists who flout the law face tough penalties, including the loss of three demerit points and getting a fine of $389,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the Victorian Government had committed more than $1 billion to improve road safety and reduce the number of lives lost on the state’s roads.
