Speed camera hot spots in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs

Road safety cameras at this Chadstone intersection have raked in almost $60 million over the past five years — about $32,000 a day. And a Leader analysis of speed cameras in Melbourne’s east has revealed other spots where motorists are most likely to be stung.

Road safety cameras at one intersection in Melbourne’s east have raked in almost $60 million in fines over the past five years — almost $32,000 a day.

A Leader analysis of financial year camera data between 2013 and 2018 has revealed the spots where motorists are most likely to be stung in Monash, Whitehorse, Manningham and Knox.

It should come as no surprise that top of the list was perennial favourite, the intersection of Warrigal and Batesford roads, which was Victoria’s top earner during the five-year period.

Cameras at the Chadstone site snapped more than 250,000 times and racked up $58.2 million in fines.

Motorists in Knox were stung going to and from the city, with cameras on the Wellington Road Bridge overlooking EastLink in Rowville raking in $33.1 million.

Whitehorse’s most lucrative site was the junction of Whitehorse and Surrey roads in Blackburn, earning $10.9 million from more than 47,000 fines during 2013-18.

Meanwhile, Manningham’s top spot was near the Donvale exit of the Melba Tunnel, with $3.4 million in fines issued.

More than 120 people have died on Victoria’s roads so far this year, up from 80 the same time last year.

Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman Ashleigh Brown said speed cameras were critical in keeping drivers accountable and safe.

“Speed is a factor in at least 30 per cent of fatal crashes in Victoria and also impacts on the severity of any injuries suffered,” she said.

Ms Brown said revenue from speed and red-light cameras went into the Better Roads Victoria Trust Account, which was used to improve safety and efficiency on the state’s roads.

A Monash University Accident Research Centre study found a 47 per cent reduction in crashes resulting in death or injury at intersections where cameras were installed.

Ms Brown said most motorists were doing the right thing, but there were people who continued to take risks every day.

“We know that speeding kills and yet people still think they know better than the experts who set the appropriate speed limits,” she said.
