An international tennis star has swapped her racquets for a footy jumper after giving up life on the road.
After hitting her last ball, Sally Peers started looking for a fresh challenge and when she settled on Aussie rules she was armed with a fair resume to present to clubs, albeit from a vastly different sport.
MORE WOMEN’S FOOTY
After turning pro in 2008, Peers claimed gold and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.
The Fed Cup team member was a quarter finalist at her home grand slam, getting through to the second week of the 2010 Australian Open in the doubles draw and the 2011 Open in the mixed doubles format.
Peers also managed a second round singles appearance at the 2010 US Open in New York.
“I worked hard and was lucky enough to have a career in the sport I love for many years but as they say all good things must come to an end,” she said.
Peers eventually settled on Bulleen’s Old Trinity Football Club — fielding women’s teams for the first time this year — due to family connections.
“My dad and uncle were both students at Trinity Grammar and played for Old Trinity, so when I found out the club was starting a women’s team I thought it would be the perfect fit,” she said.
“Growing up in Melbourne I’ve always been a footy fan and would frequent the MCG to watch AFL games, so to have the chance to play is a lot of fun.”
