BURWOOD East is set to get a $200 million retirement village and aged-care facility at the former Burwood Brickworks site, where construction of a shopping centre and housing is already underway.
The Ryman Healthcare development is expected to host more than 400 elderly people next to the 900 homes that are going up.
The New Zealand company has just had the plans approved by Whitehorse Council, after purchasing 2.5 hectares of the 20.5-hectare Brickworks site from Frasers Property in 2016.

The village will front Burwood Highway, on the vacant land to the east of the RSPCA headquarters, and is expected to include 174 independent apartments, 91 assisted living suites and 132 aged care beds.
The aged care beds will offer a combination of both high and low care beds, and the facility will include a specialist dementia unit.
The village is also set to get its own cinema, gym, indoor pool, hair and beauty salons, cafe, shop, bar, billiards room, library and bowling green.
Its first residents are expected to move in during the second half of next year and the entire project is due to finished in mid-2022.
Sales for the site have not yet begun, but a Ryman Healthcare spokeperson said the company had “had very strong interest from local residents”.
He said many people had signed up to be first to be notified when plans and pricing are available.
The spokeperson said Ryman Healthcare would be calling on the Burwood East community to nominate a respected local person to name its third Australian village after.
Ryman’s first Australian village, which opened in Wheelers Hill in 2014, was named after Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop.
The second, in Brandon Park, was named Nellie Melba, is welcoming its first residents this month.
