BANYULE has become a dumping ground for rubbish, according to the creator of an app that allows residents to report problems.

The Snap, Send, Solve app founder Danny Gorog said dumped rubbish topped Banyule’s complaint list in the app that allows people to take a smart phone photograph of a problem and send it to the app office which onsends it to the council or relevant authority for resolution.

He said that in 2017 there were 152 reports of illegal dumping and already this year there had been 113 similar complaints.

“We’re seeing pictures of rubbish dumped in parklands, on nature strips, in car parks and things like oBikes up in trees,” he said.

“There’s heaps of rubbish; abandoned microwaves, seeping garbage bags, fridges, couches and boxes strewn about.

“One app user said they were using their favourite (park) path and found rubbish everywhere.”

At Ford Park in Bellfield, a user snapped a picture of a worn-out couch and other rubbish in a car park, he said.

The number of complaints in Banyule is on the rise, with 588 made in 2017 compared to 452 in the first six months of 2018.

Mr Gorog said parking was the next biggest issue with 101 complaints in 2017, and 49 so far this year, followed by tree issues and pavements.

Banyule United Residents’ Group spokeswoman Sonja Terpstra said dumped rubbish was a continuing problem in Banyule and the app allowed people to report it easily, but she was surprised there had been only 27 complaints about graffiti this year.

She said the app ran in tandem with the Banyule Residents Against Graffiti Facebook page which loaded photographs of graffiti and tagged the council.

Banyule Council chief executive officer Simon McMillan said only a small percentage of complaints were registered through the app but it was useful in identifying the location of a problem and the user could attach photographs.

“Residents can duplicate this by sending an email directly to enquiries@banyule.vic.gov.au with exact details of what and where rubbish is located with a photograph,” he said.

He said dumped rubbish was a problem throughout Victoria.

“Banyule Council takes two approaches — the rubbish will either be collected or an enforcement officer will investigate,” he said.
