Whether it’s watching the Phillip Island penguins waddle to shore, enjoying feeding time with Werribee Zoo giraffes or Dandenongs stargazing, there’s no shortage of online streaming events to keep families entertained during lockdown. Here’s some of the best.

If you’ve had enough of Netflix and are running low on ideas on how to keep the children entertained, check out some of the best virtual events you can enjoy from home during lockdown.
A NIGHT AT THE OBSERVATORY
Hosted by the Mt Burnett Observatory, this Friday night’s Facebook live event will include a guided tour of the king of the planets, Jupiter, an introduction to Earth’s place in the solar system, a little history of the observatory, the first of a series of mini documentaries about space, and some insight into how looking up to the sky can keep us grounded in this very uncertain time. It’s the first of a series of monthly live streams from the volunteers at the observatory to bring the wonders of the universe to viewers. More than 78,000 people have registered their interest in the event.
VIRTUAL ESCAPE ROOM
Families are invited to try their luck getting through a Virtual Escape Room hosted by Whitehorse Manningham Libraries.
Like a traditional escape room, in order to move on to the next level, you must correctly solve the puzzle. The libraries are also hosting a number of other events via Zoom this month, including an online lego club.
NGV KIDS AT HOME: ART CLUB WITH BUNDIT PUANGTHONG
The NGV is running a number of online events, including virtual self-guided experiences.
Children are invited to join a free art club with Melbourne-based Thai artist Bundit Puangthong on September 12
Developed for primary-aged children, the 45-minute artist-led activities use everyday drawing materials and are designed to stimulate creative thinking.
ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE: BAMBERT’S BOOK OF LOST STORIES
The Arts Centre is bringing audiences the world of Bambert, an impossibly small man with an enormous love for writing, on its website this month. Watch the full performance of the production before trying some creative activities at home inspired by the show.
ZOOS VICTORIA: ANIMALS AT HOME
Animals lovers can enjoy livestream footage, keeper talks and other virtual updates from Werribee, Healesville and Melbourne zoos on the Zoos Victoria website.
Highlights include a tour of Healesville Sanctuary with keeper Darren, a virtual safari tour at Werribee Open Range Zoo and a gorilla keeper talk at Melbourne Zoo.
BURWOOD BRICKWORKS: FREE ONLINE CLASSES
Burwood Brickworks has a series of free online classes throughout September, including cooking masterclasses with Acre Farm & Eatery, children’s dance workshops, and yoga and pilates classes.
PHILLIP ISLAND PENGUIN PARADE
More than a million viewers around the world have already tuned in to watch the Phillip Island Nature Parks Live Penguin TV.
Running every night, it allows viewers to stream Phillip Island’s little penguins into their lounge rooms for free, just after sunset.
Organisers are urging viewers to note the streaming is free — and to beware of fake links asking you to subscribe or pay to watch.
