A council in Melbourne’s east has unveiled its worst public toilets as it rolls out a plan to decorate its dunnies to make them more appealing.

Manningham Council’s proposal is part of its 10-year public toilet plan which it has put out for community consultation until the end of August.

The plan involves investigating “a program of artworks on blank walls of toilet buildings to raise awareness of our toilet facilities”.

The council also believes the initiative would improve perceptions of safety and better activate its public spaces.

In a review of its 29 public toilets, council officers found loos at Donvale Reserve had been subject to heavy use and “high levels of vandalism”.

Toilets at Templestowe’s Pettys Reserve and on the boulevard at Doncaster’s Ruffey Lake Park were ranked the lowest and rated ‘poor’.

The Pettys Reserve block had no accessible, ambulant or baby changing facilities, while the Ruffey Lake Park toilets were not gender segregated.

But the council plans to overhaul both toilets soon, with work already underway on improving the Ruffey Lake Park toilets and to include space for a hoist and wheelchair facilities.

Toilets at Donvale’s Mullum Mullum Reserve stadium and Currawong Bush Park topped the list with an ‘excellent’ rating.

Along with the art program, the council wants to build 10 more public toilets around Manningham by 2030 and overhaul five others.

It is also looking at putting public toilets along linear trails at regular intervals and making other toilets more gender inclusive.
